What to expect

  • The concert that dazzled audiences at Dizzy’s Club now comes to The Appel Room.
  • A showcase of vocal compositions by the incomparable Duke Ellington.
  • A selection of the city’s finest young vocalists and instrumentalists.

Singers Over Manhattan returns to The Appel Room with a showcase of Duke Ellington’s wonderful compositions for vocalists. Under the musical direction of saxophonist Ruben Fox and pianist Christopher Pattishall, the program boasts four of the city’s top young vocalists: the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition winner Samara Joy McLendon, Vanisha Gould, Thelonious Monk Competition winner Vuyo Sotashe, and Joy Brown. The instrumentalists, too, are some of the city’s finest up-and-coming stars, each of them increasingly recognized for adding their own spirited flavors to the tradition of swinging jazz.

With pieces like “Jump for Joy,” “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be,” “Love You Madly,” “Come Sunday,” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If it Ain’t Got That Swing),” the performers will bring you the uplifting songs of joy, love, heartbreak, and spirituality that make Duke’s music so timeless.
