Fashion then and now

"About Time: Fashion and Duration" was an exhibit which hung at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from October 29, 2020 to February 7, 2021. The Costume Institute's 2020 exhibition traced a century and a half of fashion from 1870 to the present along a disruptive timeline. Go back in time with Page Knox on Wednesday, July 21, from 11 a.m. to noon, exploring how clothes generate temporal associations that conflate past, present and future. The Met's timeline unfolded in two adjacent galleries fabricated as enormous clock faces and organized around the principle of 60 minutes of fashion. Each "minute" featured a pair of garments, with the primary work representing the linear nature of fashion and the secondary work its cyclical character. To illustrate Henri Bergson's concept of la durée (duration) —the past co-existing with the present — the works in each pair were connected through shape, motif, material, pattern, technique or decoration. Class fee is $25; to register go to scarsdaleadultschool.org.
